Based in Highfields, Harare, Chinyaradzo Children’s Home was established in 1962, and serves as a place of safety for unaccompanied and separated children whilst awaiting family tracing and reunification. Children housed at Chinyaradzo include abandoned children, children living with HIV, survivors of SGBV, and children whose primary caregivers are unable to care for them due to mentally illness or imprisonment, amongst other causes. Children in the home are cared for in family setups with a resident house mother who takes care of them. This is based on research that shows that children thrive in a family setup and is in compliance with National Residential Care Standards.
Whilst in care, children have access to nutrition, education, health, and child protection services. This is in part due to State support; however, private, and institutional donors have a key role to ensure that children have the best care possible when transitioning from institutional to family-based care. You can contribute to this care for a child at Chinyaradzo Children’s home by exploring our donation options and join a global movement to ensure that residential care facilities only serve as a place of safety for children in need of care. You will also ensure that children are fed, clothed, supervised, stay in a clean and safe environment, and have access to books and education, amongst other needs.
