Based in Highfields, Harare, Chinyaradzo Children’s Home was established in 1962, and serves as a place of safety for unaccompanied and separated children whilst awaiting family tracing and reunification. Children housed at Chinyaradzo include abandoned children, children living with HIV, survivors of SGBV, and children whose primary caregivers are unable to care for them due to mentally illness or imprisonment, amongst other causes. Children in the home are cared for in family setups with a resident house mother who takes care of them. This is based on research that shows that children thrive in a family setup and is in compliance with National Residential Care Standards.
Whilst in care, children have access to nutrition, education, health, and child protection services. This is in part due to State support; however, private, and institutional donors have a key role to ensure that children have the best care possible when transitioning from institutional to family-based care. You can contribute to this care for a child at Chinyaradzo Children’s home by exploring our donation options and join a global movement to ensure that residential care facilities only serve as a place of safety for children in need of care. You will also ensure that children are fed, clothed, supervised, stay in a clean and safe environment, and have access to books and education, amongst other needs.
Hey there! Meet Desmond Jemwa, a 28-year-old originally from Highfield, Harare, and now living in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Desmond is gearing up for an incredible challenge to support Chinyaradzo Children’s Home, a place that means a lot to him. On August 25th, 2024, he’s taking on an ultra marathon (63 km) in Northern Ireland with the goal of raising £1000/$1285 for the kids’ welfare, education, and well-being.
Desmond had wonderful memories of his time at Chinyaradzo, and now he’s all about giving back. Running has completely changed his life, and he’s hoping to inspire others to take charge of their physical and mental well-being. It would be fantastic if you could join him on this journey to help make a real difference in the lives of these amazing children!
